Norman Teigen Obituary

In loving memory of

Norman Richard Teigen

May 30, 1943 – September 9, 2021

Surrounded by his loving family, Norman passed away at the Bingham Memorial Hospital in Matheson on Thursday, Sept. 9, 2021, at the age of 78. He will be deeply missed by his wife and best friend of 55 years, Norma Teigen (nee McGugan); children Robert (Paula) Teigen of Tumbler Ridge, BC and Robin (Peter) Klaas of Newcastle, ON; and grandchildren Aaron and Colby Teigen, and Devon, Koral, Madison and Adam Klaas.

Norman was the son of the late Niri Teigen and late Aagot Teigen (nee Hansen) and the brother of the late Roy (Nelseda) Teigen.

Norman’s sister in-law, Nels Teigen, his two nieces Terrianne, Paula-Marie and their families, and his brother in-law Doug (Linda) McGugan, his niece and nephew Lori and Michael and their families, will miss him immensely.

His absence will be felt by the community of Matheson and surrounding area. An all-around handy man, problem solver and avid listener, no job was too big or too small for Norman. He was always willing to help out in any way he could. Family, friends and community members knew they could call or stop by any time and no matter the advice, tools or help they were looking for, they knew Norm had it because Norm lived his life believing, “It is better to have it and not need it, than need it and not have it.”

Norman had a deep faith in the Lord. He was involved in many church activities, including treasurer, men’s breakfast club and, of course, handy man. He will be deeply missed by his family at St. Mark’s Anglican Parish in Iroquois Falls.

Norman proudly served a 30-year career with the Ontario Provincial Police. He was involved in community policing, he was a coach officer to many new recruits, he was promoted to Detachment Commander and retired as a Sargent in 1997. He wore the uniform proudly and will be missed by his brothers and sisters in blue.

Norman grew up in the little community of Bourkes, and moved to Matheson in 1968 when he began his career with the O.P.P. Norm was an Honourary Life Member with the B.R.M. Fire Department, serving for 20 years. He also taught the Firearms, Hunter Education Program and Boating courses, and was a Cub Scout Leader for more than a decade. Norm was a true outdoorsman, enjoying many hunting and fishing trips to Abitibi, where what happened on the island stayed on the island!!

He was very proud of his Norwegian Heritage, going back to visit with family on three different occasions. It gave him profound joy having his son and daughter accompany him back to Norway where he could share the love he had for his heritage, and show them his roots.

He was a devoted Poppa and nothing gave him a greater joy in life than watching his six grandchildren grow up and achieve many milestones and accomplishments in their lives. He was so very proud of them all.

The family would like to extend their sincerest thanks to the O.P.P. family, both current and retired members, that was with him through not only his career but the last few months, continuing to show love and support in anyway they could for their fellow officer.

To Norm’s closest family and friends, we can’t thank you enough for the continued support and love. You held a special place in Norm’s life, and continue to in ours.

Also, many thanks to Health Sciences North Cancer Centre in Sudbury, Bingham Memorial Hospital in Matheson and the many nurses, doctors and staff members that were involved in his care. Your kindness and compassion meant a lot. Special thank you to Dr. Boettcher for his excellent care.

A private Funeral Service will be held on Tuesday September 21st, 2021 at 11 a.m. from St-Mark’s Anglican Church. The Funeral Service will be live-streamed.

If desired, memorial donations may be made to the Bingham Memorial Hospital or to St. Mark’s Anglican Church and would be greatly appreciated.
